Opinion Column: Smoking Slim Cigarettes as a Man

Alright, let me get down to brass tacks about slim cigarettes: a cigarette is a cigarette is a cigarette. No matter if you’re smoking a “regular” cigarette, or slims, or kreteks, “masculine” or “feminine” cigarettes are just cigarettes. Everything is just a marketing tactic. In fact, not all tobacco companies market slim cigarettes exclusively to women. Take for example, one of my brands of choice, Esse. There are multiple box designs. Some designs look like they’re targeted to women, but others just look downright classy.

And with that, I’ll just come out and say it: I am a man, and I smoke slim cigarettes. There are various reasons why I go against the convention and smoke slim cigarettes, and I’m here to explain those reasons.

1. Slim cigarettes are easier to keep in your pocket. Unless you happen to be into rap culture and wear clothes three sizes too big for you, chances are that a standard cigarette box will not fit into your jeans without significantly bulging out of your pocket. Walking around wearing a standard pair of straight or slim (or more especially, skinny) jeans will likely crush the pack of cigarettes within 3 blocks. Slim cigarette boxes have a much slimmer profile, and will fit into your jeans nicely without any discomfort.

2. Slim cigarettes have just the right amount of tobacco. This reason may not appeal to all, but personally, I am not a heavy smoker. I smoke an average of 6-7 a day, and I never smoke a cigarette down to its butt. 95% of the time, I’ll smoke a bit over half the cigarette before throwing it out. If you think about it, that’s a lot of wasted tobacco. Slim cigarettes (obviously) do not have as much tobacco as a standard sized cigarette, so I smoke the cigarette down to about 10% left before throwing them out.

3. Male friends won’t bother to ask you for a cigarette. Alright, I understand that a premise for this reason is that slim cigarettes are considered “feminine”; however, I just had to include this because I’ve experienced many different instances where a friend would ask me for a cigarette only to politely decline after realizing I only had slims.

There you have it. These are the reasons why I, a heterosexual male, would smoke slim cigarettes. If you still decide that they’re not for you; that’s fine. However, don’t judge my character by the cigarettes I smoke.
